Due to the geometry of the mass spectrometer, it was not possible to collect all the relevant isotopes simultaneously, thus each area was mapped twice using two different configurations of the multicollection system. The magnetic field was fixed, and the electron multiplier EM detectors were positioned to collect signal from 56 Fe, 63 Cu, 98 Mo, Ag, Re, Os during the first run, and then the last two detectors were moved to collect Re and Os during the second run.
The peak positions were calibrated using pure Re and Os metal standards.
Mar 25, Abstract Eleven core samples of Ordovician carbonates and shale from within and nearby the Serpent Mound (Ohio) cryptoexplosion structure were analyzed for Re-Os isotopes. Whole-rock samples span a large range in measured Os/ Os ( to ), and exhibit a linear correlation of Os/ Os with Re/ Os. The linear relationship is inconsistent with a . The Re-Os isotopic system is particu-larly powerful where the age of Re-bearing mineral phases can be related to discrete episodes of hydrother-mal activity. The mineral most widely used for Re-Os dating is molybdenite (MoS2) because it contains low ppm to percent concentrations of Re and only ppt amounts of initial, non-radiogenic Os. Rhenium-osmium dating is a form of radiometric dating based on the beta decay of the isotope Re to saporiviafrancigena.com normally occurs with a half-life of ? 10 9 y, but studies using fully ionised Re atoms have found that this can decrease to only 33 y. Both rhenium and osmium are strongly siderophilic (iron loving), while Re is also chalcophilic (sulfur loving) making it useful in.
As sensitivity was a key issue and there were no significant mass interferences, no slits were used in the mass spectrometer. McCandless, T. Rhenium-Osmium evidence for regional mineralization in southwestern North-America.

Therefore, the Re-Os geochronometer can be used for dating the formation age of ore samples directly, and the Re-Os age will represent the true mineralization age of an ore deposit. In addition, Re is more highly concentrated in crustal rocks than Os when compared to the mantle, because Re is more incompatible than Os during mantle melting Author: Cheng-Cheng Huang, Hai-Feng Guo, Jie Li, Qiang Wang, Qiang Wang, Chunfu Zhang, Derek Wyman, Gong-Jia.

Re - Os dating and oil - source rock correlation is actually helped if the oils are highly biodegraded, e.g., oil sands, tar mats and bitumen-stained sandstones (where traditional techniques such as biomarker identification are disrupted), as this concentrates Re and Os within an oil making analysis easier. 3.

Two whole-rock Kuroko ores and two yellow color fragments separated from one Kuroko ore sample were analyzed. Their Re and Os concentrations range from to ppb and from to ppt. Re and Os become concentrated in the organic, hydrogenous fraction of organic rich shales, thus the time when the shale was deposited can be dated.
Furthermore, as Re and Os have been inherited from the source rocks, Os isotopes can be employed to correlate an oil with its source. Despite this application mainly being associated with the economic extraction of minerals, it can be employed by the oil and gas industry to date the formation of disseminated sulphide minerals within basement rocks and so the basement itself.
Moreover, when these minerals are found in fractures it can be used to provide a minimum date for when the fracture network was open.
